Perigives: A Revolutionary Approach to Menstrual Product Accessibility

Erin Da Eun Song, Jae Who and YiTong Shen's Innovative Solution to a Global Issue

Addressing the often overlooked issue of menstrual product accessibility for the homeless, designers Erin Da Eun Song, Jae Who and YiTong Shen have created an innovative solution: Perigives. This platform uses foldable posters with pockets, distributed in public restrooms and online, to facilitate the sharing of menstrual products, thereby providing a more efficient, accessible and respectful distribution method.

Perigives is a unique platform that tackles a global issue. The designers were inspired by the plight of homeless individuals who often have to choose between a meal or menstrual products. They sought to find a solution that would make the distribution of these essential items more efficient and respectful. The result is a foldable poster with pockets, which can be hung in public restrooms, allowing people to give and receive menstrual products without barriers.

The posters are designed to be easily put together and use the least amount of ink possible. They come in two different sizes for people to choose from. The four colors - red, yellow, brown, and off-white - embody menstruation and all races, as inclusivity is equally important to Perigives. The design team, consisting of Erin Da Eun Song, Jae Who and YiTong Cindy Shen, made strategic design decisions to ensure the posters would catch people's attention and convey a simple message: 'Share your menstrual products with the next person that may need it'.

Perigives posters are printable online and can be put up in any public restroom. People engage with the posters by sharing their spare menstruation products or by sharing the posters on social media. The project, which started in December 2018 in New York, has already seen a positive response. Within three hours of the posters being put up, they were filled with products from different people, and many had shared and contacted Perigives through social media.

The designers faced several challenges during the creation of Perigives. They needed to ensure the posters were accessible and affordable to produce for anyone, and that they would last a long time in public restrooms. However, their innovative solution has been recognized for its creativity and impact, winning the Silver A' Social Design Award in 2019.

In conclusion, Perigives is a unique and innovative solution to a global issue. By creating a platform that facilitates the sharing of menstrual products in a respectful and efficient manner, designers Erin Da Eun Song, Jae Who and YiTong Shen have made a significant contribution to improving the lives of homeless individuals. Their work serves as a reminder of the power of design to effect positive change in society.
